Watamu

Marine park and white-sand bays Kenya, Africa

About Watamu

Watamu is a quieter gem on Kenya's north coast, where white-sand bays and the Watamu Marine National Park put turquoise water and coral reefs within easy reach. You can expect a laid-back village feel rather than a busy resort strip—perfect if you want snorkeling, kayaking, and beach time without constant crowds. Highlights include glass-bottom boat trips, diving with sea turtles and tropical fish, sunset sails on traditional dhows, and day visits to the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, one of East Africa's last coastal forests and home to rare birds and butterflies. Gede Ruins nearby add a fascinating glimpse into a medieval Swahili trading town. The best months are January to March and June to October, when seas are clearest and rainfall is lower; short rains in November can still offer good value and green scenery. Pack water shoes for rocky reef entries, biodegradable sunscreen, and insect repellent for forest walks. Watamu works well for eco-conscious travelers, couples, families with children who love the ocean, and snorkelers who want marine life up close in a protected park setting.
